Invoicing in South Africa

VAT invoicing software for South Africa

Issue tax invoices with 15% VAT and your VAT registration number — in rands, carrying the fields SARS expects.

Built for how South African businesses actually invoice

VAT is charged at 15%, and SARS is specific about what a tax invoice must show: the words “Tax Invoice”, both parties’ details, your VAT registration number, a serial number that does not skip, and the VAT stated separately. Invroot puts those on the document by default, so a compliant invoice is what you get without working through a checklist every time.

VAT

15% VAT, applied per line

The standard rate is set for a South African workspace from the start and applied per line rather than to the whole document — so zero-rated exports and exempt supplies sit on the same invoice as standard-rated ones, without a workaround.

Tax invoice

Full and abridged, as the value decides

A supply of R5,000 or more needs a full tax invoice showing the recipient’s details; below that an abridged one is accepted. Invroot carries the fields for both, so the document matches the rule rather than your memory of it.

Be aware

Not a SARS filing tool

Invroot produces and tracks your invoices; it does not submit VAT201 returns and does not connect to SARS eFiling. Your accountant or your own eFiling profile still files. What Invroot gives them is a clean, gap-free record to file from.

ZAR

Priced and paid in rands

Invoice in ZAR, or in your client’s currency when you bill across the border — any of 140. Each invoice keeps the currency it was issued in, through reports and statements.

Numbering

Sequential, gap-free numbering

Numbers are assigned in sequence and never skip. A gap in the numbering series of a VAT-registered business is a question you would rather not be asked.

Getting paid

Payment links and automatic chasing

Every invoice can carry a payment link, and overdue ones are chased on a schedule you set, so following up is not a job someone has to remember.

South Africa invoicing questions

It produces a document carrying the fields SARS requires — the words “Tax Invoice”, your name, address and VAT registration number, the recipient’s details, a serial number, the date, a description of what was supplied, and the VAT stated separately. Whether a particular invoice is correct also depends on what you enter, so the fields are ours and the accuracy is yours.

Yes. A workspace with South Africa as its country starts with 15% as its default rate. You can add zero-rated and exempt rates alongside it, and change the default in Settings at any time.

No. Invroot does not connect to SARS eFiling and does not submit returns. It keeps the invoice records your return is built from.

Yes, in any of 140 currencies, chosen per invoice and per client. Your books stay in rands while your foreign clients are billed in theirs.

Starter is ZAR 299 a month and the AI plan is ZAR 649, both billed in rands. There is a free trial first, with no card required.
